On the morning of Saturday, May 22, 2021, the XIS Elementary Basketball Team arrived at the XLIS campus to begin their quest for the 2021 Xi’an Elementary Basketball Tournament Championship.

XIS, seeded #3, would begin their journey in the semi-finals against the #2 seeded XLIS White team. The Warriors faced the same team a month earlier which ended in a 25-8 Warriors loss. Playing much improved basketball since their season opening loss, XIS hung tough and trailed XLIS White 13-7 at Halftime. In the second half, XIS would cut the Blue Dragon lead to 2 points, but XLIS would pull away in scoring. XIS lost their opening game with a final score of 23-15.

Rather than be defeated by the loss, the Warriors were optimistic and inspired for the day’s remaining games!

Next would be the 5th place elimination game against DeHong Team 1. The loser of the game would be named 5th place in the tournament. XIS started strong in the game and competed hard throughout. Behind a balanced scoring effort with 6 points from Helina Ju, the XIS Warriors won a hard fought game 14-12 and advanced to the 3rd Place Game!

The 3rd Place Game would see XIS take on DeHong Team 2 in one of the final games of the tournament. The game would be intense with each team giving their all on the court. However, in the end it was the XIS Warriors who emerged victorious in another 14-12 game as they earned 3rd Place in the 2021 Xi’an Elementary Basketball Tournament.

In addition to their 3rd Place finish, XIS was also named the tournament’s Most Sportsmanlike Team. Additionally, XIS’ own Preston Papendorf was named to the All-Tournament Team.

The XIS community is so proud of the Elementary Basketball Team! Not only did they represent themselves and their school well, but they also embodied the Warrior Spirit throughout the season. Our Warriors fought through adversity, maintained their composure through success or failure, won with humility, and lost with grace. These things and more are evidence of engaged, empowered life-long learners and tomorrow’s leaders.
