On Saturday, July 24th, and Sunday, July 25th, 2021, Xi’an International School participated in the 8th International Interscholastic Model United Nations Conference (GMUN 2021) on the campus of Xi’an Gaoxin No. 1 Middle School. At the end of the event, XIS was named as the Outstanding Delegation of the conference!

After week’s of preparation through research, discussion, and writing, the XIS Delegation was prepared for the weekend ahead. Students were placed in various committees and assignments while being given countries to represent. Some were placed in the Media Press Core (MPC) to give active reports and feedback on the delegates resolutions and discussions. XIS Warriors won awards in every section where they were placed!

For this conference, only 2 of XIS’ 9 delegates had previous experience participating in a MUN conference. Many new faces meant new lessons to be learned and challenges to be overcome. It was evident that the unique environment of Xi’an International School prepared our students to seize these opportunities for growth and leadership. Additionally, the hard work and experience of XIS’ 3 Social Science Club Advisors (Mrs. Amy Kahler, Ms. Sidney Stewart, Ms. Natalie Sonnet) proved invaluable in preparing our students for success.

In many committees, English was the language of official proceedings and proposals, while Chinese was used in discussions, negotiations, and collaboration. XIS students were prepared for this environment by XIS’ English-only policy as well as daily Chinese classes for our students.

These skills allowed our XIS Warriors to engage confidently in public speaking, critically think in a truly dynamic environment, and create unique solutions to global issues with an emphasis on compromise. There is no doubt that the conversations had and friendships made during the conference will positively impact their lives as they become life-long learners and tomorrow’s leaders!

Student Thoughts of GMUN 2021

“I learned a lot during MUN, especially about public speaking. My thoughts of MUN was was that it was a challenging and fun experience.”
– Abigail Carrillo (Rising 10th Grader)
“MUN was definitely an experience that changed my perspective on things such as negotiations between international affairs, the importance of good communication, and that sacrifices had to be made to reach a consensus. It was eye opening to go through the process and the conference gave me so much more insight than I had expected.”
– Paulina Yao (Rising 11th Grader)
“MUN was FUN. I was able to be friends with other MPC students and talking to them made me see how they viewed the situation. Their point of view was different from mine, so talking to them helped me understand the situation and we were able to help each other.”
– Joseph Kim (Rising 11th Grader)
