U19 Soccer: Chan Ba Trophy Champions

On Saturday, April 22, 2023, the XIS Warriors returned to Hanova International School won the U19 Soccer Chan Ba Trophy for the second straight season. The Warriors braved the cold, wet conditions and instead of complaining, they embraced the adversity to secure 3 straight victories en route to the Championship. The Warriors end their season with a 5-1-2 record (W-L-D) overall.

The accomplishment has also set up a streak of sorts. XIS has not lost a U19 Soccer post-season match since Spring 2019. With the 2020 spring U19 Soccer season cancelled due to COVID, spring 2021 saw XIS tie 2 matches and win their last en route to a 3rd Place finish. Now in both 2022 and 2023, XIS has been undefeated as they have secured 2 straight U19 Soccer Championships.

However, beyond the scores and excitement, a truly amazing display of sportsmanship, camaraderie, and respect was being played out. Following the post tournament festivities, 2 Seniors exchanged their jerseys with one another; a mark of genuine respect and a life-long memory was forged.

Xi’an International School Senior (Grade 12) Abraham Kim and Hanova International School Senior (DP2) Elijah Smith exchanged their jerseys at the end of the tournament. Each of the students is decorated in their own right with Elijah Smith’s Hanova team winning the 2021 U19 Soccer Tournament while Abraham Kim and the Warriors have won the last 2 (2022, 2023).

The end of the tournament marked the last time in 3 years that they would be competing not only for their schools but against one another as well. This has produced a familiarity and a bond that few ever get to experience in their Secondary School careers. We know that the lessons of hard work, teamwork, and respect they have learned on the pitch will serve them well as they move onward to their next chapters of life in college and beyond. We are so thankful to have witnessed such a tangible and lasting impression of the positive power of sport on students’ lives.
